We are just on our way now to Colmar, France (a town straight out of a fairytale) after having enjoyed three wonderful days at La Borde, Maison des Hôtes & Spa in Leugny, France. This amazing luxury bed and breakfast is on the grounds of a 14th century chateau, with part of it burnt down by peasants during the French Revolution. Our little country cottage still had the original roof of part of the castle! The wonderful and attentive hosts, Rik and Marieke Klomp, moved here around 20 years ago and used the property as their summer vacation home. They opened it up as a bed and breakfast a few years ago and it’s like your home away from home…only better. It’s unique in the fact that it has all the amenities of a luxury hotel (spa, pool, sauna, jacuzzi, delicious cuisine); combined with the comfort of a bed and breakfast type stay.
We enjoyed Marieke’s amazing cooking, (all fresh local cuisine from her beautiful garden), lounging by the pool, walking through their beautiful gardens (that are open to the public once a week) and chatting with the chickens (Quinn’s favorite).
During the days we would head out to explore some of the surrounding little towns. We toured farmers markets, ate our weight in baguettes, tasted different French wines (tastings are free here!) and soaked up the French culture. I loved the opportunity to practice my French again!
This little piece of heaven in the French countryside was everything I hoped it would be and more! We left feeling like we had always known our lovely hosts.
